Albania's Euro 2024 Hopes Dented by Defeat to Italy

Unlucky Albania suffer narrow defeat in Euro 2024 opener

Bajrami's early goal gives Albania hope, but Italy prove too strong

Albania's hopes of reaching the knockout stages of Euro 2024 suffered a blow on Saturday as they were narrowly defeated by Italy in their opening match in Group A. Despite taking an early lead through Nedim Bajrami, Albania were unable to hold on and eventually succumbed to a 2-1 defeat.

Albania made a dream start to the game when Bajrami netted after just 23 seconds, becoming the fastest goalscorer in the tournament's history. The goal gave Albania a much-needed boost, but they were unable to build on their early advantage and Italy gradually began to take control of the game.

Italy equalised in the 21st minute through Federico Chiesa, and they took the lead for the first time just before half-time when Ciro Immobile scored from the penalty spot. Albania pushed for an equaliser in the second half, but they were unable to find a way through the Italian defence.

The defeat leaves Albania with a mountain to climb if they are to reach the knockout stages. They will need to beat Turkey in their next game and hope that Italy lose to Wales. Even if they do manage to win their remaining games, they may still need to rely on goal difference to progress.

Despite the defeat, Albania can take some positives from their performance. They showed great spirit and determination, and they caused Italy plenty of problems at times. With a bit more luck, they could have easily taken something from the game.
