Müller's brace sees Bayern thrash Dinamo Zagreb 2-0

German forward becomes UCL's all-time leading scorer with 53 goals

German forward Thomas Müller etched his name into the history books on Tuesday as he became the UEFA Champions League's all-time leading scorer with 53 goals, surpassing Spanish legend Xavi. Müller's brace helped Bayern Munich thrash GNK Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 at the Allianz Arena in their Group E opener. The 33-year-old opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a clinical low drive into the bottom corner. He then doubled Bayern's lead just before half-time with a simple tap-in after being set up by Jamal Musiala. Müller's goals were his 52nd and 53rd in the Champions League, moving him one ahead of Xavi, who scored 52 goals for Barcelona between 1998 and 2015. Bayern dominated the match from start to finish and could have won by a more significant margin. They had 24 shots on goal to Dinamo Zagreb's three and enjoyed 73% possession. However, the Croatian champions defended resiliently and managed to keep Bayern at bay for long periods. The win gives Bayern a perfect start to their Champions League campaign. They will now travel to Barcelona for their next match on September 14th. Dinamo Zagreb, meanwhile, will host Inter Milan on the same day.
